Sometimes, all it takes to elevate the look of your space is to add pattern on the walls with a play of light and colour. Mumbai-based design studio MuseLAB illustrates how to work with materials and colours to achieve this rich look for your bathroom.

For this project, the client wanted their space to have a hotel-like feel. The intention was to ensure that the space doesn’t feel overpowered, so one of the main driving concepts was to create a sense of muted opulence.

As this bathroom is used as both the common home and guest loo, the idea was to create a bold statement. A niche was created for the basin, so as to have a larger counter space clad in a grey pietra marble. This alcove was highlighted with a large semi-circular mirror with a concealed light that creates a beautiful soft glow within the space. The striking black and white floral wallpaper is used to cleverly offset the geometrical patterns and the graffiti tiles.

As one moves towards the wet area of the bathroom, a black mirror that flanks the left wall and creates the illusion of a larger space, replaces the wallpaper. The ledge wall is accentuated by a grey pietra marble cladding, and the glass door of the shower cubicle jogs around the ledge and highlights it further. The flooring for the entire bathroom is done simply in a muted grey full-body vitrified tile, which balances the drama happening at eye level.

To bring the whole look of the bathroom together, it is as important to select good fittings that merge with the rest of the decor. The black faucets and sanitary ware by Kohler assist in tying the entire look together brilliantly.

3 Tips To Create A Striking Look For Your Bathroom

  • Practically every colour and material can be used if done right. Darker colours sometimes have a negative connotation for smaller bathrooms but they can in fact really help make a bold statement, so don’t hesitate to explore dark tones!

  • A monotone, all-black bathroom with the right lighting can really help achieve a rich and luxurious look.

  • A great way to have the room feel opulent is to soften the appearance of marble by pairing it with either wallpaper or vitrified wood tiles for the flooring.
